Aimed at Bolt

[Picture of Billboard from Durex]AS OLYMPICS FEVER GRIPS US, I WAS SENT THIS PICTURE OF A BILLBOARD.

It appears to show the Olympic rings, but they are actually contraceptives called “Performa” by the company, Durex.

The tagline reads:

Bolt – Not every man wants to be the fastest in the world

Usain Bolt is the fastest male runner in the world, and I suppose one could take this as a light-hearted joke, but I have trouble with it.  They are not official sponsors of the games as far as I can tell.

It seems to me that they are abusing the Olympic rings, and indeed the name of an athlete to promote something that has nothing to do with sport.I don’t even get the joke angle — how does using a condom slow you down? I can only imagine that the act of finding the condoms, unwrapping and putting it on is a damper on the heat of the moment. What a great advertising concept — our products disrupt your foreplay and takes the “pan off the boil” so that you have to basically start the passionate build up all over again. Heaven help the advertising industry!

Things are definitely getting worse when anything can jump on the Olympic bandwagon. I bet the Olympic rings would attract young children to read this ad – and then ask questions. Thanks Durex – maybe it’s the fault of parents for having children instead of using your product.
