Why Pay?

[Picture of Toy Trucks that advertise Tesco]TARGET THE CHILDREN!

You may recall that in our post entitled, “Power Message” from back in February 2008, we railed against toys that got brand names across to children.

Well, this is similar, but instead of pretend Black and Decker or Bosch tools, we have the supermarket (and its message) directly involved.

Things are getting worse when subliminal advertising is aimed at the children of the poor.

Reversing Sponsorship

WE ALL KNOW THAT RUGBY SPONSORSHIP BY RBS WAS AT RISK BECAUSE OF THE CREDIT CRUNCH AND BAIL-OUT.

The story broke back in October 2008 (See Telegraph article here), however, RBS were reported in January 2009 to have continued with sponsoring the six nations’ rugby tournament for a further four years (according to Reuters’ on-line article here).

[Picture of reversed RBS 6 Nations' Rugby Poster in Shawlands]So what is going on with the advertising in the South Side?  Is this something to do with “The Goodwin effect”?

Click on the picture to enlarge — the poster is in a prime location, well lighted — but it’s been taken down and replaced outside-in.  What does it mean?  It certainly cannot be cheap!

World Famous

[Picture of World famous Butcher shop sign in Shawlands]DOES THE TRADES DESCRIPTION ACT COVER THIS LOCAL SHOP SIGN?

It says:

“HOWARD’S
QUALITY BUTCHERS

WORLD FAMOUS STEAK PIES AND SAUSAGES”

Can Howard really get away with this?  World famous sausages? Seriously?

If I travelled to France or Australia and asked a random person on the street if they had heard of Howard’s of Shawlands and his world famous pies, what do you think the answer would be?

Yep.  Things are getting worse when bizarre claims are made on shop signs!  Come on; we can do better than that, surely!

Deeper Surface

[Picture of a sign about resurfacing a car park]I WAS PASSING PC WORLD ON ARGYLE STREET WHEN I NOTICED THAT THE CAR PARK WAS FENCED OFF.

Then I noticed a sign that stated:

“SORRY FOR ANY
INCONVENIENCE
CAUSED DURING
CAR PARK
RESURFACING WORK”.

That seemed fair enough.. that is until I glanced through the fence at the work itself.

I was stunned to see how deep these excavations were — this was not a resurface, this was archaeology!

I may be cynical, but was this all really necessary?  It just seems a tad excessive.  Things are certainly getting worse when a car park’s surface is a metre and a half!
